“Treasure Those Pleasures”…

BEAUTIFUL BEACHI watched a fascinating interview by Susan Spencer of CBS recently on the pursuit of pleasure. What causes us to feel pleasure? We all have our favorites; sunsets, pastries, travel etc. Pleasure is defined as “an instantaneous feeling of something good”. Some pleasures are basic like food, sleep and sex. One author says that pleasure is actually a very complex and deep subject.

Paul Bloom, a psychologist, has written a book on the subject: “How Pleasure Works”. He says that it’s not just our reactions to how it looks, tastes or smells but rather to our beliefs about what it’s real essence is. He cited a study done at Stanford University and Cal Tech with wine drinkers being offered junk wine or very expensive wine. When they thought it was expensive wine parts of their brains associated with pleasure and reward lit up like a Christmas tree. He goes on to say that we all need water. If you are walking your dog and you stop for a drink of water the dog could care less if its tap or bottled. But we will enjoy the water more if we believe it is filtered.

People get enormous pleasure out of spending enormous amounts of money. Think of the celebrity auctions. Is Michael Jackson’s jacket really worth 1.8 million or Eric Clapton’s guitar worth about a million dollars? Mr. Bloom says it’s the essence of a person that we perceive as being contained in the object that gives us more pleasure. Curious!

Some pleasures are actually weird. Like stinky cheese or hot peppers. Babies would reject hot chili’s. They actually create a pain signal from the mouth to the brain. Paul Rosan calls this “Benign Masochism“. It’s the same reason he gives for why we love horror films that scare us or sad songs that make us cry. It is mind over body. The body says this is bad news get out of here. The mind knows however that we are not in danger.” I am mastering this negative experience and my mastery of it gives me great pleasure”. We are pushing the limits and enjoying it. With chili peppers he says what we like best is just below the level of what we can’t tolerate. This would be the same for roller coaster rides or other thrill seeking adventures.

Professor Gregory Burns of Emery University talks about how we can maximize pleasure. He did an experiment where he gave subjects alternating drops of water and juice. Their brain activity showed preference for juice. When the juice came at unexpected intervals and it was a surprise they liked it even more. His advice is to surprise ourselves! We have to take risks to experience great pleasure. In his opinion that is why people say the first time they experience something is the best because it is truly a surprise.

There is always room for something new if we stay open to it. Keep pushing the envelope, keep being surprised. That is the eternal conflict between the reptilian brain that wants to do the same old, same old, and the higher brain that wants more experiences.

Maybe that’s what bucket lists are really about. We want to pack in as many new surprises as possible. Something to think about!

Repeat After Me “I am a Web Goddess!”

ConfidenceI have a secret tip for you to exponentially  improve your skills and abilities with online tools.

In one of my sideline coaching activities I coach healers and artsy types to use online tools.  Specifically, I  help the 40+ age group to overcome any fear or  inadequacies they may have using online internet tools and learning to maintain their own online presence.

My process is gentle and developmental – after all my background and first career was in Early Childhood Education.  We take things in stages.   The journey starts where the client is today and if that means finding the “ON” button for the computer -that is where we start.  For anyone learning something new the journey continues to the building blocks of getting an account, what to put in those boxes, how to make the most out of tools like Facebook, Twitter, Linked in etc.  Learning how to do what you have been wanting to learn forever on the internet can be very gratifying.  At the same time I have noticed that clients can get over-whelmed learning so many new things in a short space of time.

Has your your heart has just skipped a beat?  Then this is for you!

If you are a repatterning practitioner, of course you can always do the Integration For Growth repatterning.  It is a great repatterning to stop yourself from spiraling to your old way of being.

However a  journaling affirmation I have used for quite some time can help your learning immensely.

At the end of a session of learning something new, when your grey cells feel taxed, simply declare out loud “I fully and completely integrate all the new things I just learned.”   Really ground this affirmation by writing it out at the end of the day and saying a few statements of gratitude to yourself.  Actively appreciate yourself for what you have learned.

If you are negotiating your way around web tools you can also add on to your declaration of new learning…..

I AM A WEB GODDESS!

With love and light
Carolyn

p.s.: Ardis here. I can personally testify to the gentleness and clarity of Carolyn’s coaching. She has taken me from kindergarten to grad school is a very short time! Go for it: once you get “round the bend” you will never look back. See you on the internet!

Wedding bliss…

Double rainbow!

I just returned from a beautiful trip to Hawaii where I attended my son’s wedding. He and his bride wanted a simple wedding on the beach at sunset and nature delivered a beautiful backdrop for their special day. It is so powerful to witness love. When two people make a commitment to each other everyone who is privileged to be there is infused with  excitement. It reminds us that life is good and precious. I wish my son and beautiful d.i.l (daughter in law!) a grand adventure together. There was a double rainbow over the beach as they took their vows. An auspicious beginning…

My red shoes are on their way to beautiful San Diego….

I am so excited to be heading to the beach (again) in San Diego. My group is ready for primary patterns on July 13&14. It is wonderful teaching from the new books. Chloe has refined the material and it is a pleasure to teach from the new editions. If you have not taken a primary patterns class recently I invite you to join us. Marina Village is a beautiful venue. We are overlooking the water with all the gorgeous boats at the marina, plenty of sunshine and breezes. It doesn’t get much better than that.

If you need to take a class this year to maintain certification please check out the airfare’s to sunny California and join us! My red shoes and I will be looking for you.

How to become a certified practitioner….

If you have attended the six basic seminars of the resonance repatterning process you may want to consider becoming a certified practitioner. We live in a world of credentials and to build a professional practice the certification from the RPA is an accomplishment you can be proud of. People often speak of the journey being more meaningful than the destination. Your journey began with empowering yourself and continued through learning about the five elements and meridian system. The next step is to be observed giving sessions to receive feedback on your technique, personal coherence and relationship skills. The students I have observed have shared that the experience of being observed and receiving supportive feedback was invaluable( although a little scarey!). They were all happy with their decision to “go for it”. At this time only teachers are observers. We bring our many years of experience to this process and offer you valuable insights to deepen and strengthen your practitioner skills and your personal growth as well.

If you would like to become certified here are the steps:

1. Complete all six basic seminars in the resonance repatterning process. Make sure your teacher signs and dates each class you attend on your sheet.

2. Go to the RPA website and become a member of the association and pay your membership fee.

3. Declare that you would like to become certified and receive your PDF of instructions.

4. Upon completion of the basic six seminars and declaring that you want to become certified at the RPA start keeping a record of all sessions you give yourself and others; whether in person, on the phone, or video conferencing. Check off the list of requirements as you complete each one.

5. About 1/3 of the way along it is good to be observed. That way we can support you and make sure your sessions are reflective of the process. This can be done in person or online with a designated observer.

6. Integrate your feedback and continue with your sessions. Notice how your sessions have changed and hopefully improved as you begin to refine your technique.

7. Schedule your second observation when you have about 2/3 of the requirements completed.

8. Integrate this new feedback into your resonance repatterning sessions. Notice how you feel each time you do a session. Are you more confident? Are you more aware of the client and their energy? Are you excited about the changes you and your clients are experiencing?

9. Schedule your final observation once you have completed all the requirements. You may need additional sessions with an observer since many aspects of the process need to be demonstrated. You may need extra sessions to make sure everything is covered.

10. Your designated observer will fill out all forms, review your session notes and make sure all the T’s are crossed and the I’s dotted. You send the paperwork into the certification team at the RPA who review and make the final determination.

Most students take about a year to complete the process& some need more time if they don’t have an active practice. It takes as long as it takes. It is the journey that really matters. How it affects you as a person AND the piece of paper stating that I AM A CERTIFIED PRACTITIONER is a nice addition to your wall!

I invite those of you who have become certified to share your certification journey with me to encourage your fellow students to go for it.

I will be doing some observations in San Diego July 12 and 15. Please let me know if you would like to join the group.
