I have been reading some articles recently on trust. It seems that we don’t trust each other very much. We have stopped engaging strangers and increased security in our homes. With the increase of social media, designed to increase connection, we’re trusting each other less.
In a recent poll it was found that less than a third of us are willing to give people we meet like waiters, taxi drives etc. the benefit of the doubt. We assume they will rip us off. Today everybody’s a scam artist until proven otherwise.
Can you remember a gentler time? My parents never had a key to their front door. When we sold their house we had to have one made. My dad often left his keys in the ignition and as kids we played outside without supervision. So what happened? Or more importantly what can we do about this?
How can we become more trusting again? Maybe a small step is best. Take a chance. In some small way CHOOSE to trust a stranger. Take a small chance on your neighbor’s better angels!
